Razor Bramble
Razor Bramble
[Conjuration] [Life]
Level: [Nature 8]
Components: [S], [V], and [F]
Casting Time: 1 Full-round action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft. per CL) @{medium_range} ft.
Effect: 1 bush + 1 bush per 5 CL, maximum 5 [[{1+floor(@{cl}/5),5}kl1]] bushes
Duration: 1 round per CL @{cl} rounds
Saving Throw: None; opposed grapple checks, see text
Spell Resistance: No
Focus: At least a +4 focus.
Dense bushes of hooked, blade-edged thorns grow in unoccupied ground squares within range. Each bush occupies one 5-ft. square and cannot move. Choose creatures the bushes will ignore when casting the spell; your character is also ignored. The bushes lash at other creatures within 10 ft., wrapping them in thorny branches.
Grasping Branches: Each bush can attempt to grapple at most one creature per round, without an action from the caster. It attempts this when an eligible creature enters its reach. A bush can also attempt this once when it first grows, or at the beginning of the caster's turn if an eligible creature is already within reach. These opportunities share the same limit of one attempt per round. If several eligible creatures are present, the caster chooses the target.
The bush first makes a melee touch attack with an attack bonus equal to CL + PMA modifier + Spell Proficiency. If it hits, it makes an opposed grapple roll using 1d20 + CL + PMA modifier + Spell Proficiency. The defender uses their normal grapple modifier or substitutes an Escape Artist check. The initial grapple attempt follows the normal grapple rules, including attacks of opportunity and the penalty for being damaged by one.
Each bush can hold only one creature at a time and cannot attempt another grapple while occupied. Each creature can be held by only one bush from this casting at a time. The bush holds the creature in its current square; it does not pull them into the bush's square. The bush only grabs and holds: it does not use Break, Expose, Move, Pin, or Submission.
Struggle or Endure: A grappled creature can make its normal free attempt to escape or take control at the beginning of its turn. Each attempt to escape or take control causes 40 slashing damage, whether the opposed check succeeds or fails, as the hooked thorns tear across the creature's body. Further attempts cause the same damage each time. The bush uses 1d20 + CL + PMA modifier + Spell Proficiency for its opposing roll.
A creature that remains held at the end of its turn and has made no attempt to escape or take control during that turn instead takes 10 bleed damage. It does not take this bleed damage on a turn when it suffered the slashing damage for struggling. These are fixed amounts of damage; Spell Proficiency is already included in the bush's grapple modifier and does not add to either damage amount.
Bushes: Each bush has AC 15, 130 HP, and no Shatter Resistance. It is vulnerable to desiccation damage, taking 50% more damage from that type. Destroying a bush immediately releases its captive without causing the struggle damage. When the spell ends, all bushes wither and release any creatures they still hold. The spell's bleed damage ends when a creature is no longer held.
