Echoes of the Past
[Divination]
Level: [Arcane 5], [Generalist 5]
Components: [S], [V], and [F]
Casting Time: 10 Minutes
Range: Touch
Effect: 10 ft. radius + 5 ft. per 2 HD area centered on a touched point [[10+floor(@{hd}/2)*5]] ft. radius
Duration: Concentration; up to 1 round per HD @{hd} rounds
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
Focus: A polished piece of amber worth at least 250 gp.
You open a window into the recent history of the area. The spell assembles an impression from the traces that remain in the room: sound, movement, light, and other details may be perceived, but the caster cannot interact with the echo. The caster chooses how far back to look when the spell is cast. The echo can only reveal events that left some trace in the area's current state; cleaned, removed, or destroyed evidence creates gaps or misleading impressions. The spell does not identify creatures by name or reveal thoughts.
Make an accuracy check when the chosen event is first viewed: 1d20 + floor(HD/2) + PMA. Use the event's age to set the DC and
determine how much of the scene can be trusted.
| Event age | Accuracy DC | Result on a success | Result on a failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Within 1 hour | 10 | Clear replay; sequence, appearance, and sounds are reliable. | One minor detail is missing or wrong. |
| 1–24 hours | 15 | Mostly clear replay; minor details may be blurred. | One important detail is missing or wrong. |
| 2–7 days | 20 | Major actions are apparent; exact sequence and identity may be uncertain. | The scene is fragmentary and includes one false or misplaced event. |
| 2–4 weeks | 25 | Only the strongest impressions and major changes to the area remain. | The caster receives a plausible but substantially misleading impression. |
| 1–12 months | 30 | One significant event may be glimpsed in brief, indistinct flashes. | No useful information is gained. |
| More than 1 year | — | The spell cannot produce a reliable echo. | No useful information is gained. |
The caster may examine a different event during the duration, but each new event requires another accuracy check. The caster can observe no more than one minute of the event per round spent concentrating.
VTT Macro Description:
@{character_name} opens a window into the recent history of an area. The caster chooses an event and rolls [[1d20+floor(@{hd}/2)+@{pma}]] against the DC for its age. The spell can only show traces that remain in the area's current state, and older events become less accurate and more misleading.
